ACBC CHILDREN'S BURN CAMP

Most of us were self conscious as kids.  About our cloths, our hair, even a blemish on our face. Think about it for a minute. How much more do burn survivors have to deal with? Not only did they live through a horrifying experience, but now people stare. They stand out in a crowd. Wouldn't it be great to have a place where they fit in? A place where they can have fun, laugh, play and just be a kid. We are creating such a place -- ACBC Children's Burn Camp -- open to burn survivors aged 6-17, free of charge. We provide a fun, safe, and caring environment; a place where kids can unite to play, heal, grow, and support each other after surviving burn injuries. It's a place where we hope kids will share their stories and bond with other children without intrusive stares.

ACBC Children's Burn Camp is held at the Lucas County Rec Center, in Maumee, Ohio. Camp is held in and around the large brown stucco building with adjoining Pavilion. This annual day camp was created for burned children in the Northwest Ohio area. The terrain and facilities contribute to the comfort and well-being of the invited day campers who meet there. Medical resources are available on site.

The purpose of the ACBC Children's Burn Camp is to provide a residential day camping experience for children with burn injuries. Our camp provides a variety of social, recreational and educational activities for campers. Activities typically include things such as: hiking, games, arts and crafts, singing, team-building exercises and more. These activities provide opportunities for personal growth, self-esteem, and development of leadership skills. It is our goal to provide a camp where campers can run, play, and have fun without feeling out of place or different. Adults from the firefighting and medical profession serve as volunteers.

  Camp goals include:

  • To provide a unique, exciting, fun-filled and growing experience.
  • To convey to each camper the feeling that he/she is a unique and worthwhile human being.
  • To emphasize the fact that everyone has something positive to offer. Each camper is a winner if he/she does their best with the abilities they have.
  • To promote numerous challenging co-educational experiences to promote a positive feeling between boys and girls.
  • TO HAVE FUN.

HOLIDAY PARTY

In December of 1993, ACBC sponsored its very first Christmas party. Burn unit staff members from St. Vincent's planned and organized the very first party for former children of the burn unit. At the third annual ACBC Holiday party, held on the first floor in the main conference area at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, distinguished guests were: Santa Claus, Ronald McDonald and area firefighters dressed as clowns to provide a day of entertainment, presents, and holiday festivities.

Other organizations to assist with our annual party include: the Alpha Chi Omega sorority from the University of Toledo who helped set up and do crafts for the party and students from Central Catholic High School.
